The Art of the Quilter: II

“THE ART OF THE QUILTER: II”  A GREAT SUCCESS!

Walls of Wittenberg’s second competitive quilt show closed on February 12. 289 visitors came to the month-long exhibition from many parts of Wisconsin: Sun Prairie to Stevens Point, Phelps to Ripon, Germantown to Gleason, Antigo to Abbotsford and many points in between. One visitor commented, “Fabulous, fabulous! I stand in awe of the talent displayed.” Every visitor struggled with choosing their favorite for the People’s Choice Award  that was won by Sharina Adams, Phelps, for her exquisite paper-pieced bed quilt—“Wedding Star.”

“Leaning on the Fence,” a wall hanging of sprightly sunflowers on a field of blues, by Sharon Rotz, Mosinee, captured Best of Show.  Winners in the bed quilt category were Award of Excellence: “Wedding Star” by Sharina Adams, Phelps; Award of Merit: “Blue Moon,”a symphony of blues creating a night sky with ever-changing moons by Mary Sipiorski, Stevens Point; and Award of Honor for “Stack and Whack,” a serene medley of pink and green pinwheels by Andrea Nelson, Wittenberg.

Winners in the wall hangings category were Award of Excellence: “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not,” a pensive young woman plucking daisy petals by Laura Krasinski, Menomonee Falls and “Vanishing Point,”a study in perspective in vibrant yellows and turquoise by Chris Lynn Kirsch, Watertown. Awards of Merit were given to “Goose Tracks,” a fascinating  study in “bling” by Sandy Kamine, Iola and “Wild Flowers,” with vibrant and yet delicate hand appliqued blocks of flowers by Kathy Brown, Keshena. Awards of Honor were presented to “Fractured Fun,” a design “fractured” and then reassembled by Linda Matheson, Amherst and “Through the Window,” a wholecloth wall hanging by Ann Becker, Clintonville. Throughout the show, there were also many examples of the skill and artistry of Ms. Becker’s long arm quilting.

Linda Krueger, Pinery Patches, Tigerton, once again rose to the challenge of judging the show. “From Grandmother’s Bed to Museum Walls,” a talk by Sharon Rotz and “A Challenged Mind,” a talk by Chris Lynn Kirsch brought 50 people each time to the Community Center.  All were captivated by the artistic imagination and skill of these 2 women.

Brenda Bohm, Bowler, won the wall hanging—“Aurora Borealis”—created and donated by Andrea Nelson, Wittenberg.

Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats and Nueske’s District #3 Antiques sponsored the show. Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats and Nueske’s District #3 Antiques, Pinery Patches, Tigerton; Sew Smart, Wausau and The Quilting Workshop, Wausau all donated prizes.

Quilting....two pieces of cloth stiched together.  But is it more than that?
